A rite is defined as a ceremonial act. On Sunday, we ceremoniously took the training wheels off of Jeffrey's bike. He has been ready for weeks and asking, but we wanted to take him to the park so he could practice on this wide open grass field - less blood and hospital visits that way. Well, we ordered up perfect weather, and off he went. Jeff barely had to help him, he really was ready, and I would not take a million dollars for the look of pride on that little boy's face. Sometimes being a mom is just so, so very great. You could tell that he loved the feel of it, the wind in his face, and the amazing sense of accomplishment. There was that look of freedom and the sweat that comes with a job well done.
We all have training wheels on in areas of our lives - and need them for certain periods of time, but oh the wonder of doing something on our own. Our first apartment, first checking account, first home, first baby. Sigh, to be six again. Enjoy, Sir Jeffrey!
